1.7  File Names

In mentioning the on-line E manual, we have already given you a hint as to
the structure of file names.  Normally the bracketed portion contains the
project identifier and the programmer name, however, in the case of
documents describing programs available for all users, it is desirable to
have these all listed in a common [UP,DOC] directory.  Since all of the
files in this directory are already so identified as DOCuments, the
portion of the name following the period, called the EXTention is used to
identify the person who created the file.  Usually this is the person to
consult if you has trouble with the program.  In the case of much-used
programs where many people have contributed to the program's development
(and the E program answers this description), your troubles are apt to be
your own fault and almost anyone can help you. There is,however, an
accepted channel for complaints via the GRIPE file, as will be described
later.

Files stored on the disk are thus seen to carry a file identifier of the form

	FILNAM.EXT[PRJ,PRG]

where FILNAM is a name of 6 or fewer alphanumeric characters. and EXT is a
3-character extension which should follows certain conventions in
identifying the type of the file.  The period and the extension may be
omitted if the file is never to be referenced by some other program, such,
for example, as a compiler.  Should you be so unfortunate as to use more
than you allotted file space, some of your files can be purged and the
system purger uses the extension to decide which of your files it will
deleted.  Files with an extension of TMP are the first to go!

The characters in the square brackets further identify the file to prevent
it from being confused with other files that may bear the same name and to
specify the file directory to which it is assigned.  In your case, these
characters will be 1,PRG, where 1 is your original PRJ and PRG will be
replaced by your assigned programmer name.  You may reference files
bearing the PRJ,PRG that corresponds to PRJ,PRG under which you are
logged-in (or aliased, as will be explained later) without type the
brackets and the bracked information. If you are referencing files on
other directories, this information usually must be included.  Because of
the [PRJ,PRG], You can be as free and fanciful as you like in creating
file names.

You now should know enough to start using the system.  You could get into
trouble, however, and you might be more comfortable if you knew a few of
the more useful system commands.  These are always typed in response to
the period system prompt and unless specifically stated they are always
terminated by a carriage return.  So here they are:
